Richard Wilson was born to a prosperous and well-connected family in Montgomeryshire, central Wales. He received a thorough classical education and trained as an apprentice in Thomas Wright’s London studio for six years before establishing his own practice in the late s. Richard Wilson and the Transformation of European Landscape Painting was co-organized by the Center and Amgueddfa Cymru–National Museum Wales. It was on view at National Museum Cardiff from July 5 to Octo Wilson, however, had a prickly nature and a problem with drink, and in the early s his career went into a sharp decline.
The Royal Academy (of which he had been a founder member in ) helped him out by appointing him librarian in (in succession to Hayman), but in his family took him (now a pitiable figure) back to Wales. Wilson painted many Welsh landscapes and is recognised as changing the face of British landscape painting.
While his work encouraged artists to come to Wales, many of his later Welsh compositions, such as Caernarfon Castle (Edward’s main seat in Wales) remind us more of the warmer climates of Italy. As such, they also point to his inspirations outside of Wales.
